Detention, internment, work camps and forced labor camps
Internment camps:
After liberation, there emerged in a number of places approx. 500 various “camps” at which were concentrated on the one hand Germans, and on the other individuals suspected or accused of acts against the republic. Towards the end of the year 1945, three types of camps were fixed – internment (for those who were supposed to be tried by exceptional people’s courts for acts pursuant to the retribution decree no. 16/1945 Coll.), detention (in which Germans were concentrated before their expulsion) and work (for those who were assigned to work pursuant to decree no. 71/1945 Coll.). The collections are not organized according to camp, but more or less thematically. Nonetheless, information on individual camps is very important (e.g. protocols drawn up towards their dissolution often summarize the entire history of a given center).
Forced labor camps:
Forced labor camps were established pursuant to Act No. 247/1948 Coll. They became a source of cheap labor for businesses. In the collection of the Forced Labor Camp Directorate are principally deposited various announcements from the camps, biographies of individuals registered in forced labor camps, a card index of registered persons, situation reports, materials on the operation KK-T-43, questionnaires of forced labor camp inmates, a card index of servicemen who served in individual forced labor camps, proposals and assessments of commissions, requests of those registered, etc. In the collections of individual forced labor camps we most often find orders and instructions, lists of released and relocated individuals, assessments, economic-accounting issues, and various correspondence and organizational affairs of servicemen. We specifically call attention to materials from the Mírov forced labor camp, in which were interned former officers of the Czechoslovak Army.
