Institute activities related to the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia

The Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes has prepared a series of events this month, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Communist totalitarian regime in Czechoslovakia.

Exhibition: “We Did Not Give Up, or Stories of the 20th Century”

Prague, 27 October 2009 – An outdoor exhibition called “We Did Not Give Up, or Stories of the 20th Century” will open in Prague for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. This event is dedicated to the people who sacrificed themselves in the fight against the totalitarian regimes of the last century. The exhibition is being held under the auspices of the Czech prime minister Jan Fischer, and it will be formally opened at Prague Castle on 29 October 2009.

Invitation to a press conference

We would like to invite you a press conference, which is taking place as part of the launch of an outdoor exhibition entitled “We Did Not Give Up, or Stories of the 20th Century.” This event has been prepared by the Post Bellum organisation as part of the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. The exhibition has been arranged in conjunction with the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, and the City District of Prague 1. Many other partners have also contributed to the event.

20 Years After Conference Continues

Prague, October 7, 2009 – The international scientific conference “20 Years After: Central and Eastern European Communist Regimes as a Shared Legacy,” organized by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, and financially supported by the European Union’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) continued this morning for its second day in Prague's Nostitz Palace.

Exhibition of Photographs from the Workshop of the Czechoslovak Communist Secret Police Launches U.S. Tour

WASHINGTON, DC, August 20, 2009 – The Czech institutions centered on the expert disclosure of the totalitarian mechanisms of Central European Communist regimes – the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Security Services Archive – have organized the unique exhibition, “Prague Through the Lens of the Secret Police,” and released its companion eponymous English-Czech publication.

Opening of the Exhibition “Brno in August 1969”

Prague, August 20, 2009 – Deputy Director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes Miroslav Lehký, First Deputy Mayor of Brno-Center Zdeněk Pazdírek, Eva Pánková of the Moravian Museum, and Jiří Mikulka of the Security Services Archive opened the exhibition „Brno in August 1969“ today in Brno’s Freedom Square. The exhibition will remain on view in the square until September 17. Miroslav Lehký emphasized the importance of recalling the nation’s past in places in which the public might not be inclined to seek out history.

The Security Services Archive Launches its Digital Archive Project

Prague, July 10, 2009 – The Security Services Archive, in cooperation with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, launched the pilot phase of its Digital Archive Project today. Interested parties are now able to browse digitized archival records in any of the Archive’s research rooms (two in Prague and one in Kanice near Brno). The Digital Archive project is a follow up on the “Open Past” project initiated by the Ministry of the Interior in 2007.
