The Institute and Archive Have Signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory
Kiev, June 9, 2009 - Director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, Pavel Žáček, Director of the Security Services Archive, Ladislav Bukovszky, and Director of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, academic Igor Yukhnovsky, signed a cooperation agreement in Kiev on Tuesday, June 9. The institutions committed themselves to cooperate in the areas of scientific research, educational projects, and documentation of political repression from the periods of the Nazi and communist totalitarian regime. They also visited the memorial to victims of the Holodomor in the center of Kiev together. The international trip further included cooperation negotiations with Volodymyr Viatrovych, director of the Regional State Archive, which collects materials from the former NKVD and KGB, and which forms a part of the Security Service of Ukraine.

International Working Meeting Inaugurated

Delegation from Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) in Prague
PRAGUE, April 22, 2009 – A delegation from the Institute and Archive’s partner organization, the Polish Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), visited the Security Services Archive today. General Director of IPN Jan Baster, director of the section for disclosing and archiving of documents Zbigniew Nawrocki and his deputy Jacek Kwilosz were primarily interested in the Czech experience with digitization and disclosing of archival documents. During their two-day visit, these Polish colleagues examined all of the Security Services Archive‘s Prague workplaces and familiarized themselves with the process of digitization of archival documents. Director Nawrocki promised cooperation and exchange of experiences in the construction of a Czech digital archive and invited Institute and Archive employees to visit IPN and its archive.

Exhibition “Prague Through the Lens of the Secret Police”

Exhibition “On the Cold War Front – Czechoslovakia 1948-1956”
| This exhibition is dedicated to the thousands of unknown fellow citizens who, after February 1948, decided to actively fight from abroad against the Communist power in Czechoslovakia. Dramatic battles of the Cold War took place on the border between East and West in the years 1948-1956. The secret operations of exile intelligence groups have been practically forgotten by now. Archive Address Change
Prague, January 7 – The Council of the City of Prague has decided to change the name of Havelkova Street to Siwiecova Street. The street on which the Institute and Archive are located is now named after Ryszard Siwiec, who burned himself to death in September 1968 at Warsaw’s 10th-Anniversary Stadium (Stadion Dziesieciolecia) in protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia. The Council of the City of Prague accommodated the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes’ request to change the name of the street, which until now had born the name of the former Secretary of the Communist Red Trade Unions, Vaclav Havelka.

Signing of cooperation agreement with the Slovak Nation’s Memory Institute and Historical Archives of the Hungarian State Security
The director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, Pavel Žáček, and director of The Archive of Security Forces, Ladislav Bukovszky, on Thursday November 6 and Friday November 7 signed cooperation agreements with partner bodies in Slovakia and Hungary. These will enable all institutions easier access to material dealing with the totalitarian histories of their states. The agreements also enables ‘stages’ for foreign researchers and room for closer cooperation. Part of the agreement signed with Hungary covers the viewing of archives and collections of an institution which has already been in existence for almost 10 years.
